For the first time, Louisiana shows a grand overall presentation of female surrealists. Most were in the inner circle around the first figure, the French author and poet André Breton, and exhibited on an equal level with their male colleagues at the pioneering exhibitions of the time. Yet it is the men who have stolen the spotlight, and today many of the women surrealist artists are overlooked and forgotten.

Spotlight on female surrealists

Louisiana rectifies matters with this summer's exhibition, Fantastic Women, which features 250 works by female surrealists from the USA, Mexico, and Europe. In addition to well-known artists such as Frida Kahlo, Louise Bourgeois, Leonora Carrington, and Meret Oppenheim, it presents Kay Sage, Leonor Fini, and Toyen for the first time in a Danish context.

The individual and the collective

The exhibition presents each artist with a selection of distinctive works, highlighting their contribution to the Surrealist movement. It puts into perspective similarities and connections between the artists. It shows that women played a more important and numerous role in Surrealism than in any other artistic avant-garde movement.
